Stocks near their 52-week high: how to scan for them

A stock close to its 52-week high has little overhead supply: few holders are sitting on losses waiting to sell at a higher price. Momentum traders often start their search here.

Why highs matter

Price at or near a 52-week high means the stock has recovered everything it lost over the past year. Research on momentum investing has long found that stocks near their highs tend to keep outperforming for a time, though the effect is modest and not reliable in every market phase.

New highs versus near highs

Filtering the list

A raw list of highs includes illiquid and overextended stocks. Combine it with relative strength, the trend template and a liquidity filter, and check market breadth: the number of new highs rises and falls with the market’s health.

Strength or stretch?

A stock far above its 50-day average has already moved a lot, so a new high can be a late entry. Looking at how tight the base was and how far price is above the averages helps separate a fresh breakout from an extended one.

A worked example

Of 500 stocks, 40 are within 5% of their 52-week high. Filter for RS above 80 and liquid-only and 12 remain. Of those, 4 are in the Leading sectors, and 2 have a tight base. A short list of 2 to 4 charts to study is far easier to work with than 40.

Strategy examples

These are illustrative rule sets that show how the scanner can be used. They are not recommendations or advice, the numbers are examples, and rules like these can lose money. Test any idea on your own and manage risk before acting.

New-high momentum list

  1. Run the near-high screen and set RS to 80 or higher.
  2. Cross-check with the trend template.
  3. Rank by distance from the high and base tightness.
  4. Watch for a close above the high on rising volume.

First pullback after a new high

  1. Note stocks that made a new high in the last month and are now 5 to 8% below it.
  2. Wait for the pullback to hold the 20- or 50-day average.
  3. Look for a bounce on rising volume, and size the position from the pullback low.

Breadth gate

  1. Check how many stocks are making new highs. Rising counts support the signal.
  2. When highs shrink while the index rises, favour fewer, stronger names or stand aside.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find stocks near their 52-week high in India?

Use a screener that lists NSE stocks by distance from their 52-week high. The scanner’s near-high screen does this and lets you add RS and liquidity filters.

Is a new 52-week high a buy signal?

No. It shows strength, not what happens next. Many stocks reverse after a new high.

Why do new highs count rise and fall?

It tracks how many stocks are advancing together, which is why it is a common market breadth measure.

What is a good distance from the high?

There is no fixed rule. Many traders use within 5–10% for near-high lists, then judge each chart.
