A stock screener turns a few thousand listed companies into a short list you can actually study. This guide explains what screening does, how swing and positional traders use it, and exactly what the Market Strength screener covers, including its limits.

## What a stock screener does

A screener applies rules to every stock in a universe and keeps only the ones that pass. The rules can be about trend (price above the 200-day average), strength (beating the index), setups (a tight base near a high) or liquidity (enough daily traded value to enter and exit). The output is a list to research, not a decision: the screener narrows the search, you still read the charts and manage risk.

Screening is most useful when the rules match a clear process. A momentum trader looks for leaders near highs; a pullback trader looks for leaders resting at a moving average. Running both on the same day gives two different lists from the same market.

## Which stocks are covered

- **India:** screens open on all NSE-listed stocks in the data: over 2,200 with an RS rating and full screen metrics in October 2026. You can narrow any screen to the core scan list (the Nifty Total Market: Nifty 500 plus Nifty Microcap 250), the Nifty 50, Next 50, 100 or 500, the Midcap 150, Smallcap 250 or Microcap 250, F&O stocks, stocks outside the indices, or IPOs from the last 12 months. A liquidity flag marks stocks trading at least ₹10 crore a day, so you can hide thinly traded names.
- **United States:** the S&P 1500 plus the Nasdaq-100, as a separate market you can switch to.

Sector, industry and theme rankings are built from the core scan list, and stocks are grouped by NSE sector and industry and by cross-sector themes such as defence or data centres. See the [Nifty 500 screener guide](https://getmarketstrength.com/nifty-500-stock-screener) for when it helps to restrict a screen to large, liquid index members.

## Ready-made screens and filters

The app has more than 30 ready-made screens, each a fixed, visible rule. They fall into a few families:

- **Relative strength:** RS rating leaders, [RS line new highs](https://getmarketstrength.com/rs-line-new-high), RS improvers, RS leaders losing strength, [strong in a weak market](https://getmarketstrength.com/strong-stocks-in-weak-market), multi-timeframe RS leaders.
- **Trend:** [trend template](https://getmarketstrength.com/minervini-trend-template) leaders, [stage analysis](https://getmarketstrength.com/stage-analysis-weinstein) and stocks that just entered Stage 2.
- **Setups:** [volatility contraction (VCP)](https://getmarketstrength.com/vcp-pattern-scanner), [cup with handle](https://getmarketstrength.com/cup-and-handle-pattern-scanner), flags, tight weeks, [Darvas box](https://getmarketstrength.com/darvas-box-scanner), coiled stocks and near-breakout lists.
- **Price and volume events:** [near 52-week high](https://getmarketstrength.com/stocks-near-52-week-high), near 1- or 3-month high, [volume breakouts](https://getmarketstrength.com/volume-breakout-scanner), [pocket pivots](https://getmarketstrength.com/pocket-pivot-scanner), unusual volume, gap-ups, [multi-year breakouts](https://getmarketstrength.com/multi-year-breakout-scanner) and [pullbacks to the 50-day average](https://getmarketstrength.com/pullback-to-50-dma-scanner).
- **Groups:** sector leaders, groups near highs, improving groups and [sector rotation](https://getmarketstrength.com/sector-rotation-nse).

Each screen shows its rule and has adjustable thresholds (for example “RS ≥” or “within % of high”). A custom screen builder lets you stack filters such as RS rating, distance from the 52-week high, moving-average position, market-cap band and liquidity.

## A screening workflow, step by step

1. **Check the market first.** Look at [breadth](https://getmarketstrength.com/market-breadth-indicator): the share of stocks above their 50- and 200-day averages. Setups fail more often when breadth is falling.
2. **Find the leading groups.** Open the Sector Rotation view to see which sectors and themes have the highest RS and which are improving.
3. **Run one or two screens that match your style.** A breakout trader might start with “Near 52-week high” filtered to RS 80 and above; a pullback trader with “Pullback to 50 DMA”.
4. **Cut the list.** Keep liquid stocks in leading groups. Ten names you understand beat fifty you skim.
5. **Read each chart.** Open the stock page for the price chart, RS line and volume. The Odds chip shows how similar past setups behaved (past base rates, not a forecast).
6. **Plan the trade yourself.** Entry, stop and position size are your decisions; the screener does not make them.

## Data, timing and limits

Prices are end-of-day closes from public sources (NSE lists, niftyindices.com and Yahoo Finance daily prices). The scan runs once after each Indian trading day closes, so it is not a real-time or intraday tool. Public data can have gaps or late corporate-action adjustments, and pattern screens are mechanical rules: they will include some charts a human would reject and miss some a human would keep. Full details are on the [methodology page](https://getmarketstrength.com/methodology).
