Swing trading means holding a stock for a few days to a few weeks to capture one “swing” in price, usually part of a larger move. It sits between day trading, where positions close the same day, and long-term investing, where shares are held for years.

## Swing trading in one minute

A swing trader buys a stock that is rising or about to rise, holds it while the move lasts, and sells when the move stalls or the plan says to exit. Trades usually last from two or three days to several weeks, and decisions are made on daily charts, often once a day after the market closes. That is why the style suits people who cannot watch a screen all session.

The idea is to take the middle of a trend, not to catch the exact low or high. A swing trader accepts that some trades will fail and keeps each loss small, so a few good trades can pay for the losers. There is no guarantee that this works for any one trader.

## Swing trading vs day trading vs positional trading vs investing

| Style | Typical holding | Charts most used | Overnight risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Day trading** | Minutes to hours, closed the same day | Intraday, 1 to 15 minutes | None |
| **Swing trading** | A few days to a few weeks | Daily, sometimes weekly | Yes |
| **Positional trading** | Weeks to months | Daily and weekly | Yes |
| **Investing** | Years | Weekly and monthly charts, company results | Yes |

This site covers swing and positional trading of shares. It does not cover intraday or futures-and-options trading.

## How swing traders find stocks

Many swing traders look for stocks that are already strong, then wait for a low-risk moment to enter:

- **Strength:** a high [relative strength](https://getmarketstrength.com/relative-strength-scanner) rating, in a sector that is [leading](https://getmarketstrength.com/sector-rotation-nse).
- **An uptrend:** price above rising 50- and 200-day averages, as in the [trend template](https://getmarketstrength.com/minervini-trend-template) or [Stage 2](https://getmarketstrength.com/stage-analysis-weinstein).
- **A setup:** a [pullback to the 50-day average](https://getmarketstrength.com/pullback-to-50-dma-scanner), a tight base such as a [VCP](https://getmarketstrength.com/vcp-pattern-scanner), [cup with handle](https://getmarketstrength.com/cup-and-handle-pattern-scanner) or [flag](https://getmarketstrength.com/flag-pattern-scanner), or a [volume breakout](https://getmarketstrength.com/volume-breakout-scanner).
- **Liquidity:** enough daily traded value to enter and exit without moving the price.

## A swing trade, step by step

1. **Check the market.** [Breadth](https://getmarketstrength.com/market-breadth-indicator) shows how many stocks are above their 50- and 200-day averages. Breakouts fail more often when it is falling.
2. **Find the leading sectors.** Money tends to flow into a few groups at a time.
3. **Shortlist strong stocks in uptrends.** A scan turns thousands of stocks into a list you can read chart by chart.
4. **Wait for a setup.** Strong stocks pause, then move again. Entering at the pause gives a closer stop than chasing a stock that already ran.
5. **Decide the exit before you enter.** A stop-loss below a recent low or support, plus a plan for taking profit, such as a close below the 21-day average.
6. **Size the position from the stop.** Risk a fixed small share of your capital on each trade (see the example below).
7. **Review.** Note what worked and what did not, and change one thing at a time.

## A worked example of position sizing (illustrative numbers)

Position size is what keeps one bad trade from doing real damage. These numbers are made up to show the arithmetic. They are not a recommendation.

- Capital: ₹5,00,000. Risk per trade: 1%, which is ₹5,000.
- A stock trades at ₹200 and the plan puts the stop at ₹190, so each share risks ₹10.
- Shares to buy: ₹5,000 ÷ ₹10 = 500. The position is ₹1,00,000, which is 20% of capital.
- If the stop is hit, the loss is about ₹5,000 (1% of capital), before costs.
- If the stock rises to ₹230, the gain is ₹15,000, three times the amount risked.
- If it instead gaps down overnight to ₹185, the loss is ₹7,500 (1.5% of capital): a stop-loss does not guarantee the exit price.

## Costs and tax

Frequent trading adds brokerage, securities transaction tax, exchange fees, stamp duty, GST and impact cost (the price you move by trading). Shares sold within 12 months produce short-term capital gains, currently taxed at 20% for listed shares before cess. Tax rules change, so check the current rates with a tax professional. A strategy has to beat these costs, which is why [backtesting with costs and tax](https://getmarketstrength.com/stock-strategy-backtesting) matters.

## Common mistakes

- Trading thinly traded stocks that are hard to exit.
- Entering without a stop, or moving the stop further away once the trade goes wrong.
- Risking too much on one trade.
- Chasing a stock that is already far above its moving averages.
- Ignoring the market’s trend, then blaming the setup when breakouts fail.
- Changing the rules in the middle of a trade.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is swing trading?

Holding a stock for a few days to a few weeks to profit from one price swing, usually within a larger trend. It sits between day trading and long-term investing.

### Swing trading kya hai?

Swing trading mein aap stock ko kuch din se kuch hafte tak hold karte hain, taaki ek price swing ka faayda mil sake. Yeh day trading se alag hai (usi din square off) aur long-term investing se alag hai (saalon tak hold). Entry se pehle stop-loss aur position size tay karna zaroori hai.

### How long does a swing trade last?

Usually from two or three days to a few weeks. The exit depends on the plan: a stop-loss, a profit target or a trailing exit such as a close below a moving average.

### Is swing trading the same as day trading?

No. A day trader closes every position the same day. A swing trader holds overnight, which allows bigger moves but adds the risk of a gap against the position.

### Do I need futures and options for swing trading?

No. Swing trading can be done with ordinary shares held in the cash segment for days or weeks. Futures and options add leverage and expiry, and are a different subject.

### How much money do I need to start?

There is no fixed minimum. What matters is how much you risk per trade (commonly 1% of capital or less) and whether costs are small compared with each position.

### Which indicators do swing traders use?

Common ones are moving averages (such as the 21-, 50- and 200-day), relative strength, volume and chart patterns such as VCP or flags. No indicator works every time.

### Is swing trading profitable?

It can be, but there is no guarantee, and many beginners lose money. Results depend on the rules, risk control, costs and the market. Test a rule without hindsight before using real money.

### Is this investment advice?

No. It is general education. Consult a SEBI-registered investment adviser before trading.
